Six or Seven Nations

At the beginning of parshat shemot Hashem tells moshe: I am giving you the land of the 7 nations. Rashi explains that 1 nation was left by themselves. But the parasha lists 6 nations, so should not the parsha say 6 nations?

Answer:

The Jerusalem Talmud (Yerushalmi, Shevi’is 6:1) writes that the Girgashi nation left of its own accord, and therefore, as Ramban explains (Shemos 3:8), only six nations are listed. The verse, it should be noted, does not call the Land of Israel (in this verse) Land of Seven Nations, but only a Land Flowing with Milk and Honey. Where it is called the land of seven nations (in the writings of our Sages), it refers to the seven nations that originally lived on the land, which defined the evil essence that was present before the Children of Israel banished them from the land.
