A Baby Born Circumcised

My great nephew was very recently born and according to his father, the doctor delivering his child, upon viewing the child fully born said: “This child was circumcised in the womb”. This is my niece and her husband’s first child, and many months ago had decided to name their child Jacob. My nieces’s paternal and maternal line are Sephardic and Kohanim.
What does this type of circumcision mean?

Answer:

A Mishnaic text (Avos de-Rabbi Nasan 2:5) writes that a number of the greatest leaders and most refined characters were born circumcised. These are: Adam, Seth, Noah, Shem, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and Job. Also included in the list is Bilam, with whom God spoke, and who could therefore not be uncircumcised.

Therefore, being born circumcised is traditionally seen as a sign of holiness, and a symbol of great potential.

In halachic terms, there is a dispute among Tanaim and Amoraim (Shabbos 135a) over whether a child who was born circumcised requires ‘circumcision,’ which is achieved by letting out a little blood from the area. Although this remains a matter of doubt, Rosh writes that the custom is to let some blood from the area, and the practice is ruled by Tur and Shulchan Aruch. This need not be done on the eighth day, but can be done later, when the child is older.

It is interesting that your neice had already decided to call their child Jacob, who was one of those listed in the Mishnah that were born circumcised.

  1. That is interesting. I just had my son 2 months ago, My husband and I decided to name our son Abel when I was about 7 months pregnant. Abel was born circumcised as well.

  2. although it is uncommon, it does occur from time to time that one people are born without foreskin

  3. My son was born in December 2015 and was also born this way. After I delivered him, the doctor looked back at me and said that his job had already been done for him. What’s strange about this is, the doctor kept saying that this was only the second baby boy he had ever delivered that was completely born circumsized. The doctor had also delivered my husband 22 years prior to that and he was also born circumsized. I know, from research, that it is very rare for a child to be born with this. But it must be even more rare for a father and son both to be born circumsized.

  4. I was also born with natural circumcised I though I was the only one but I can now see there are people just like me out there

  5. Me to,I was born circumcised but at first I had feared that I’m not normal but now I’ve prooved that Iam normal.Thank u.

  6. Hi Ernon. I just came from my sister who has a baby boy. When changing him I noticed the boy is fully circumsised , he is born circumsised. Am happy to hear that this is normal and very happy to hear that this is a sign of holiness. This is their first child. I named the boy Ozayo meaning God is coming. I gave this name when the mother was still pregnant.

  7. I was born circumcised and the rabbi told my parents that it was the sign of a holy man. Not that I consider myself any more holy than anyone else but the other oddity is that my twin wasn’t. Took me a very long time to realize how rare my birth was considering I am a fraternal twin. Maybe I am just rationalizing it in my favor.

  8. I was born like that in 1991, but here in Uganda, people who don’t believe in God say that it’s a sign of misfortune and being without luck. So I was fade up of my nature. But now am at least relived from what others say about me

  9. I was born completely circumcised in 1956, and on my mother’s birthday. From what I’d discovered many years ago. It was about one in one million such cases back then. Thanks to you all for letting me know through your post that I have brothers out there just like me. Lol
