Borei nefashos is made after drinking a revi’is (86cc) in a time frame that is normal for drinking that amount. Most cold, un-carbonated beverages are drunk in this way. Concerning hot drinks, which are usually drunk slowly, the Mishnah Berurah (210:1) writes that one does not make a berachah (after drinking slowly), but some do make a berachah, because this is the normal way to drink tea and coffee. Orchos Rabbeinu writes that this was the custom of the Chazon Ish.
