Certain kabbalists write that every physical entity has a spiritual essence within it, which is its ‘soul.’
This can best be understood as a parallel to the ‘Idea’ of each element — the Idea that is behind the physical.
Certainly, the human soul is unique in its relationship with Hahsem, and in its place in the Afterlife. The soul of the animal, and surely of the inanimate object, is related to this world alone (as the verse writes, the human spirit points upwards to the heaven, and the animal spirit downwards to the earth).
