Cleaning Fruit on Shabbos

Is one allowed to clean fruits/vegetables on shabbos (lettuce, strawberries etc)? If so, what is the proper way to clean them?

Answer:

It is permitted to clean fruit and vegetables on Shabbos, which can be done by placing the fruit/vegetables under running water, and checking them for bugs.

However, the Mishnah Berurah (based on the Shulchan Arcuh 319) writes that fruit and vegetable cannot be cleaned by means of immersion in water, causing the bugs and dirt to come to the surface, because this will be a case of borer.

For strawberies, which are notoriously hard to clean, and generally require immersion in water (and soap), it is therefore advisable to clean before Shabbos.
