Removing Ayin Hara

Many of my family members are into this process of “removing Ayin Hara”. I have a few questions about it…First of all is there an makor for this in seforim by the yidden? Perhaps this is a sort of “witchcraft” and ossur. I know by the goyim they have such thing as a process of “removing ‘evil eye'”. What happens in this case is you pay 30 shekels, the woman takes some sort of liquid metal and pours it into water, the metal in the water forms into a sort of “eye shaped” thing a tefillah is said with Shem HaShem and “tadaah!” your ayin hara is gone. The whole thing seems like complete non-sense to me however I’d like to know if there is in fact some sort of issur involved. As well for the people that are doing it, perhaps there is a problem of genevas ha-das? If you have any sources for this I’d appreciate it.

Thank you!

Answer:

The process you describe is well known, and there is a long tradition among Sephardic Jewry of removing ayin hara in this way.

To those of us from European-Ashkenazi backgrounds it definitely sounds odd, but then again the whole concept of ayin hara is very foreign to us, despite the fact that it appears in the Gemara and in later poskim.

Note that there were also Ashkenazi Jews living in Israel who referred to women who performed this procedure.

Therefore, it is not considered witchcraft, and neither is it considered geneivas daas. Personally, I — and the great majority of Ashkenazy Jewry — don’t have any tradition in this matter, and therefore I cannot of course recommend it.

  1. Do you know where the tradition comes from among the Sephardim? Perhaps they derived it from a different source outside of the Jewish traditions?

(As I mentioned this is well known among the goyim as well this idea o “evil eye” and removing it…)

  2. Hi I have a question , I took my daughter to Kabbalist she said my daughter having Ayin hara on her and fears inside her I want to know how I can do to remove Ayin hara and fears from hey please help us!

    1. Before going to the Kabbalist, I would highly recommend going to a child psychologist. Before considering metaphysical phenomena, we first have to take care of the phenomena that we know and are familiar with. Children can suffer from fears for many well-known reasons, as many parents know, and this can often be dealt with via known techniques without involving such matters as ayin hara etc. Good luck!
