Why be a Religious Jew?

If a non-religious Jew asks me “why should I be religious Jew?” How/what should I respond to that person (in order for that person’s mind might get influenced by what I will say)?

Answer:

The answer depends very much on the personal nature of the person involved, and the circumstances of his question.

One possibility is to speak about purpose in life.

If we agree that G-d created the world, we ought also to agree that He did so for a reason. But what is that purpose? How are we part of it? What do we need to do to be in sync with the purpose?

The answers to these questions are given by Judaism, and by the Torah.

It is no wonder that statistically, Orthodox Jews are more “happy” and content with life than their secular counterparts, because they have purpose in their lives. Purpose, in and of itself, is satisfying; whatever we go through in life, and even in times of hardship, we know that it has a purpose, we know that G-d is good and desires our good.

Thus Orthodox Judaism is beneficial in this world and in the next (as the Mishnah in Avos writes of the Torah).

Good luck!
