Moving Mechitzah on Shabbos

In a simcha hall there is a mechitzah that is easily moved with wheels on the bottom. However it’s been now in the same place for a number of months. On Shabbos the people using the hall wanted to move the mechitzah, is this muter?

Answer:

Although the mechitzah has not been moved for a while, this will normally (for such mechitzos) not be out of any special kepeidah (being particular to keep the same place), but simply because there was no need to move it.

The principle of muktzeh machmas chisaron kis will therefore not apply.

The wheels on the bottom prove that the mechitzah is essentially portable, and therefore I don’t see a reason not to move the mechitzah on Shabbos.

  1. The original kavana of the shailo was because of the problem of “soser” but I suppose that’s not a problem then either..

    1. Right. “Soser” cannot apply to something that it by definition temporary.
