Using a Talmid Chacham (Torah Scholar)

From where do we know what one is not allowed to be mishtamesh with a Talmud Chocham? (And what does this mean exactly? i.e. what’s the geder?)

Answer:

The source is from the Gemara (Megillah 28), and the halachah is ruled by the Shulchan Aruch (Yoreh De’ah 243).

An important ruling is given by the Shiyurei Berachah, who explains that where the Talmid Chacham wishes to perform the act of his own accord, there is no problem, and the problem is only in “using him” where he would rather not.

An interesting additional source is the Gemara is Bava Metzia (30) which according to the Rosh states a ruling whereby a Talmid Chacham must be wary of maintaining his own kavod, so that a Talmid Chacham should not agree to things that involve a degradation of his honor as a Torah scholar.
