Hair Covering during Tashmish Ha-Mitah

Recently there was a question and discussion on the website in regards to times a woman must cover her hair. It came up the issue when she is alone with her husband b’shas tashmish if her hair has to be covered or not. R’ Pfeffer had cited the fact that al pi kabballah there is an inyun the ish and isha should be completely without clothes. He assumed that to mean the hair as well. However this point I’m not so clear on since the Zohar and Makuballim are (as is known) very makpid that a woman’s hair should be covered at all times (and as I understood it even in private settings.) As well there is of course a minhag among many chassidim stemming from kabballah that an isha should shave her head (leaving not so much to uncover ;). Therefore I don’t know if R’ Pfeffer’s re’ah is a good one in this case. If there are any makoros or discussions on this issue of a woman not covering her hair b’shas tashmish I would be interested to see them because as it stands now it seems the hakpada that the poskim (and b’frat makubalim) have is seemingly even b’shas tashmish.
Thanks

Answer:

Shut Divrei Chachamim (p. 262) cites from Rav Pinchas Sheinberg zt”l that a woman who is careful to fulfill the Zohar prescription concerning covering hair, should do so even at the time of tashmish ha-mitah.

I have not seen further sources that debate or mention this point.

The custom of some Hassidim to shave a lady hair is not especially prominent, and is not recorded in Chazal on in early sources, so that this is not something that can be relied upon in the discussion.

Best wishes.

  1. Hello just wanted to comment that the chasidish thing with shaving the head is actually not stemming from the kabbalah it actually goes against most things because the woman’s hair is for her husband and the Zohar does not say to shave her head. They shave their head because they think it might be a separation for when they dip in the mikveh (purifying waters)

    1. Thanks for the comment — although I have heard explanations for this based on Kabbalah, I am certainly not expert on the matter. Some give the reason as a concern that hair should come out of the covering — see Teshuvos Ve-Hanhagos Vol. 2 no. 692.
