Free Education?

My talmud torah school, an orthodox school in a well-known city in America, forgot to bill me this year; my kids are being educated for free; am I obligated to inform them? If they forget for the entire year, am I obligated to pay them?

Answer:

This is clearly an oversight on the part of the school, and a mistake on their part. It is not permitted to “make the most of it,” and you have to pay for the studies.

Aside from the fact that of the mistake (they would not give the schooling if they knew you weren’t paying), you are benefiting from the education, and there is an obligation to pay for the benefit you receive, so that even if the school does not demand payment, you have to offer it.

If you know of other options for Jewish free education, please let us know!!

Best wishes.
