Returning Money for Book Sale

My friend “remembers as day” that I sold him a book and I remember selling him one. the problem is, I just found the book in my house!!
He has a copy in his house too, so it can’t be he bought it from me.
I only had one book. This “sale” took place two years ago and he just emailed me asking if he could pay. He paid me via PayPal and I have his money.

What’s the din in this situation?

Answer:

The story sounds a little strange, I must say.

If you are certain that you didn’t sell him the book (meaning, you think that finding the book in your property is conclusive proof), you should return his money, and tell him he needs to make an effort to find the true seller.

However, if it is possible that you sold him the book, meaning that although you have a copy, perhaps you had two copies, or perhaps the copy you have was given you after selling the other copy (or by some other means), then you can rely on his memory and can keep the money for yourself.

The second option appears the more likely, since you, too, remember selling the book; only if you are now 100% sure that you didn’t sell it must you return the money.

Best wishes.
