Paying Back for Undercharging

Hello,

I bought something at a Jewish owned store and when I checked the receipt I found that they undercharged me on the item, and the price I paid was less than the price tag. Am I chayav to go back and pay the difference?

Answer:

If you were mistakenly undercharged, you have to pay the difference: You bought and received an item worth X, with full intention of paying X – and therefore you became obligated to pay X, yet only paid Y.

You therefore have to make up the difference (X – Y). It is as if you have money of the store’s in your hand (which the store is not aware of), and at the very least you have to make the store aware of this

However, it is not clear that you were mistakenly undercharged, because there is sometimes a discrepancy between the price tag price, and the computer price, which is the true price. Of course, if you paid the true price, there is nothing to refund.

You can check this with the store.

Best wishes.
