Seeing Spouse

If a couple is not allowed to see each other unclothed during intimacy (darkness required) then why are they allowed to see each other unclothed at any other time assuming that one’s spouse unclothed is in itself an intimate thing to see?

Answer:

It is permitted to see one’s spouse unclothed, with the exception of during intimacy (Shulchan Aruch 240:5).

The reason given for this is that one might see [in one’s wife] something unpleasant, but it appears that this concern is specifically related to the act of intimacy – the act might not be complete because of this concern – and it is not a general concern for marital harmony. Therefore, specifically during the act of intimacy the lights should be off, whereas in general there is no prohibition against seeing one’s spouse unclothed.

Best wishes.

  1. seems prudent to mention that this is only true during times when intimacy would otherwise be permitted

    1. Obviously, otherwise they wouldn’t be intimate.

  2. Would prohibition about seeing wife without clothing on during intimacy apply to a foreplay period as well or only during intercourse?

    1. it wold apply only during intercourse.
