Translation of Almah

To any Rabbis

Sorry I forgot to ask these questions.

However if I asked them before, no need to answer them again.

1)In Judaism today, is a man allowed to marry more then one woman? or he can only man one?

2)In the Jewish tradition, was there any bad prophets, just as good prophets?

3)Does Almah in Hebrew means virgin?

I am asking because if I am correct, Christians and Jews have a different interpretation for the word, Almah.

I think Christians would say virgin, and I think Jews would say, Maiden. I need to know which is the correct Alamh means virgin or not.

Anyways thanks for answering my other questions.

Yours sincerely

Costas Sfikas

Answer:

1. No. There is a rabbinic decree (not of the original Sages of the Mishnah, but a later decree of European origin) prohibiting this. Although Jews of eastern countries are not formally bound to the decree, today the concept has been accepted universally.

2. Already answered.

3. No, it means a maiden. It doesn’t mean a virgin — see Isaiah 7:14 and Proverbs 30:19.

Best wishes.
