Shul Membership with Maaser Money

Can one use maaser money to pay shul fees. At the end of the day, it’s not really benefiting us because wether we can pay or not, we are still allowed to daven in the shul and participate normally. We can’t afford the fees and if you can’t they don’t make you pay. We do have maaser however and would like to contribute to the shul.
Thank you so much.

Answer:

If in the absence of paying membership a person will not receive a place in the shul, one may not use ma’aser money for this. Essentially, this is a “purchase” that one cannot use maaser for.

If, however, one can daven in the shul anyway, and more or less find a fixed place even without paying membership, the membership fee is in effect a donation to the shul and may be paid from maaser money.

In the case of the question it sounds like this will be the case.

Best wishes.

  1. May one use maaser money to sponsor siddurim/chumashim to a shul?
Does it make a difference if the shul had already bought a certain amount of siddurim and is subsequently asking if anyone would like to sponsor them?

    1. You are allowed to give maaser money for that even if they were already bought.

  2. Is supporting an elderly parent considered part of masser?

    1. If they need the support it is a very big mitzvah and a very high level of tzedakah
