Modim Derabanan Quietly

Shalom Rav and thank you for taking my question.

This shabbos for shachris at neitz I saw an older man with a sign he was holding during chazara hashatz in mussaf which say ‘say Modim quietly’.

What basis is that on? I know Amen and in Kedusha one should say in a ‘normal’ voice, not yell, not whisper. Can you tell me the source for this person.

The funny thing thing is is this guy went and embarrassed another older man by showing him the sign after this man said it louder to this person’s liking, funny how people take their frumkite on others and while in mean time, may lose their olam haba over it. However that isn’t my question, just venting on that point

Thanks.

Answer:

I suppose the idea behind the sign is that people should not say “modim derabanan” too loud, which will cause others to not be able to hear the Chazzan as he says the Modim of his Amidah.

However, in general I haven’t noticed a problem of this nature, and people don’t usually say Modim Derabanan loud enough to prevent others from hearing the Modim of the Chazzan.

As you correctly point out, it is a shame that people get so carried away with their Chumros that they totally disregard basic Bein Adam LeChavero matters.

Best wishes.
