Consequences of Marriage – Kohan and Divorcee

If a Kohen proceeds to marry a divorcee, what are the consequences on 1. the Kohen (does he suffer karet ?) 2.the divorcee and 3. the children of this prohibited marriage (are the mamzerim?)

Answer:

1. No, there is no kares. The prohibition is a regular negative prohibition, and the punishment of karet does not apply.

2. The divorcee retains the regular status of a divorcee.

3. The children are not mamzerim, but they will be chalalim – disqualified from Kehunah.

Best wishes.
