‘I have realised that the family sukka I will be using for sleeping and eating has in built metal poles across the width – they were told that if the wooden beams are placed perpendicular and on top of these poles and then the schach is on top of that, then there is no issue as the metal is not touching the schach – is that true

Answer:

Yes, this is known as “maamad d’maamad’ which means it is the second level support. Only the initial support, the first thing closest to the schach and holding it up may not be from material not kosher for schach. The secondary support as you describe may be from metal and any other material.
