Non Jewish Mother

I let a shidduch go on way too long. She’s had a kidney transplant and she’s so attached to me she cries and I cave in. She lost her temper once and said ——- to me. Can you break up a shidduch for that bad mida? Plus, her father was Jewish, mother not and wants an ortho conversion but wants to live conservative. Does such a conversion even count? Thank you, Rabbi.

Answer:

No, conversion only works when one is ready to accept on themselves to keep Torah and Mitzvos [orthodox]. Otherwise the conversion is invalid. So in the meantime there is a much bigger issue than bad middos, she is in fact not Jewish and hence an unsuitable match for a Jewish boy.

  1. Thank you, Rabbi, re the conversion problem. Any suggestions on how I break the news to her? She’s going to cry and cry and get depressed. What should I say? Should I know your name and yeshiva so I can say a prominent Rabbi, Rabbi _____ of ______ yeshiva, respected in his field, made this ruling so I cannot marry you halachically, or something to that effect? Thank you, Rabbi. Michael

    1. i suggest you have her meet with your local orthodox rabbi in person so that he can explain to her in a clear yet compassionate way the issues at hand.
