Why do the silent Amidah?

In our times, the main form of prayer is the silent amidah, this is when one fulfills their obligation of prayer. The chazzan’s repeating aloud is no longer done with intent to fulfill other’s their obligation of prayer. The chazzan only had others in mind at a time when most people were unable to pray on their own.
