Torah in Middle of Night

Kvod haRav, if I wake up during the night (I am male), can I think in learning (just thinking, without moving my mouth) while still in bed, or do I need to get out of bed and wash (with a bracha or no?) and make birchos haTorah? If I get out of bed, or think of other things besides Torah, it is likely I won’t be able to fall asleep again.

Answer:

You may think in Learning at this point without Birchas Hatorah.

Sources:

Shulchan Aruch O:C 47:4, wee Mishna Brura ibid. who brings the opinion of the Gra that even thinking in Torah requires a bracha. However in your case, see Mishan Brura s”k 29 that there is doubt as to whether one who is still planning to continue his nightly sleep should make brachos at this point, and as such one should sooner rely on thinking without a bracha.
