Hi, the way I tie my tefillin as taught to me by my father is to do 7 straps towards me and then the three on my finger and then NOT to form a shin on my hand. I.e I do Ashkenazy 7 straps and then Spehard hand tying, since I am Ashkenazi can I do not what my father does and do full ashkenazi starps or is my fathers minhag more important.

If you are now practicing full Ashkenazi customs, as this is the community/kehilla you are a part of, you can keep full Ashkenaz customs with regards to tefillin. If possible you should ask permission from your father to change your custom.
