Question:
I just read that one doesnt say tefilas hederech with shem umalchus for a journey that is less than 72 minutes. Does traveling from Beit shemesh to Jerusalem require tefilas haderech with shem?
Answer:
Tefilas haderech is only said if a person travels a parso = 4 mi l=8000 cubits = 72 minutes. There is a dispute amongst the poskim if this a measurement of distance or time. The majority of opinions hold that it is a measurement of distance. So therefore traveling from Beit Shemesh to Jerusalem require tefilas haderech with Shem since the distance travelled is greater than 8000 cubits (approx 4 kilometers). (there are those who don’t say tefilos haderech for a different reason because there are houses and dwellings all along the route so it as if you have never left the city).
