Removing Curlers from a Shaitel on Shabbos

Question:

CAN ONE REMOVE ROLLERS WHICH WERE PUT IN BEFORE SHABBOS FROM A SHAITEL ON SHABBOS

Answer:

Your question is an excellent one. According to a number of poskim that I have spoken to, rollers in a shaitel are considered mixed together with the hair, since they are surrounded by the hair. Therefore removing them would be meleches borer, and therefore, they should be removed before Shabbos.

However if that wasn’t done, there is a permitted way to take them out, but it is risky because if it isn’t done correctly it is a question of a melacha dioraysa. The way to do it, is as with other borer situations, to remove the wanted from the unwanted (here we want the shaitel and we don’t want the rollers). Therefore she unrolls the curler most of the way so that the curler is still wound around with the hair, (and the curler is still mixed with the hair.  Then she should hold the roller in one hand and the shaitel in the other, and then she should pull the shaitel away from the roller, while holding the hand with the roller stationary. This way it is considered taking the good from the bad. One other point to remember, this may only be done if she is going to use the shaitel right away, and not if it is only for later on in the day.
