Question:

Is it acceptable to count 3 stars and decide Shabbos is over? I used to do that. Do I need to do teshuva?

Answer:

Technically shabbos is finished when we can see three medium stars outside. Practically we don’t do it this way because we don’t really know what medium stars are, therefore we go according to the calendars that tell us when we can assume that the three stars have come out.
