Carrying (wearing jewelry) on Shabbos where there is no Eruv

Question:

Dear Rabbi
Thank you so much for your kindness. On Shabbat if there is no Eruv may one walk to shul or anywhere wearing jewelry on? Pesach is coming and the first day is Shabbat when I may be in a hotel for Pesach or in hotel near the Sedarim. Should I remove my jewelry for Shabbat and then I could wear in the second day Pesach when it will be Yom Tov when we can carry what is needed for that day.
Thank you so much Rabbi and Chag Kasher v’Sameach for you and your family

Answer:

You are bringing up an interesting point, there is controversy in the Shulchan Aruch regarding wearing jewelry outside of an eruv on Shabbos. Some opinions say not to because the woman may take them off to show her friend, and mistakenly carry them in a reshus horabim (public domain). There are people who are strict about this, and don’t wear jewelry outside on Shabbos, however the majority of people are lenient with this (and this is the minhag) and do wear jewelry on Shabbos even out of an eruv. The main reason is like the Rema says that nowadays women are accustomed to wearing jewelry, and there is no fear that she will actually take them off to show her friends.

Getting to your question, you may walk outside even on Shabbos when there is no eruv with the jewelry.

Have a chag kasher v’sameach.
