Married couple sleeping separate

Question:

If there are no longer children at home, is it wrong if I sleep in a different room than my husband? He snores so loud it disturbs my sleep and I often feel exhausted in the morning. And if its ok to, is it different if there are children at home sometimes? Thank you

Answer:

Unfortunately many wives have this problem, and halachically you can sleep in another bedroom if your husband doesn’t mind it. Halachically, whether there are children at home or not will not matter, but there are other considerations to take into account. Firstly, it will not look good when they find out that their parents aren’t even sleeping in the same bedroom. Secondly, from a practical angle, it can be quite detrimental to your shalom, bayis.

I would look at other options, such as your husband seeing a doctor to determine why he is snoring so loudly. It could be caused by some medical condition that can be treated and solved. If that doesn’t work, try ear plugs. They work wonders, but you might not hear your alarm in the morning.

Best Wishes

  1. Wow. This woman put up with her husband’s snoring for the whole time that the kids were still at home (20-30+ years). Amazing!
