Mistake in kiddush

Question:

For the Friday night Shabbos kiddush, I made the borei pri hagafen. I then accidentally began reciting the yom tov kiddush beracha. I realized my mistake soon after beginning that beracha, and then began reciting the Shabbos kiddush beracha. After doing this, I drank from the kiddush cup. Was this the correct procedure? Or perhaps the mistaken partial yom tov kiddush beracha would be considered a hefsek between the borei pri ha’gafen and the drinking of the kiddush cup, thus necessitating a new borei pri ha’gafen?

Answer:

This is called hesech hadas b’taus, when you didn’t mean to be mafsik, and it was only a mistake. We find this idea in a number of places. For example, after saying hamotzei, and one remembered that he didn’t yet feed his dog. The halacha is that he is allowed to say please feed the dog before eating and it isn’t a hefsek since it is needed for the meal. What about if he then finds out that the dog already ate, is his talking out a hefsek? The poskim say that it isn’t. The same thing here, although he said some words that weren’t appropriate, nevertheless it isn’t considered a hefsek.

Best wishes

Magen Avrohom 271-32, who says that it isn’t a hefsek, see R’ Akiva Eiger on the M:A who says that it is, however see M:B 271-78, Shar Hatzion ibid 74, Chayei Adom 6- 17, Gra”z  271-28, Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 77-12, all agree with Magen Avrohom. Additionally see Btzel Hachchoma 3-130, Minchas Shlomo 1-18 (2), Mesores Moshe 1 O:CH 188 that also paskin this way.
