Shutting Off the Gas

On a stove that is electrically ignited, if you left a small flame on Shabbos and it went out and you smell gas, are you allowed to turn the knob off?

Answer:

If the flame is out, and turning the knob will not have any effect other than shutting off the gas, it is permitted to turn the knob and shut off the gas supply.

Source: see Rema Orach Chayim 308:8 — there is no prohibition of muktzeh in a potentially dangerous situation.

  1. Since it’s a new stove and I never had an electrically ignited one, I don’t know if it will do anything else besides shutting off the gas

    1. To my knowledge, it should do nothing more than shut off the gas. Try it out before Shabbos.
