Pen Taken In Error

Question:

I had a job interview with a company in Yehud. Part of the interview was an editing test for which I was given a cheap ballpoint pen. I didn’t get the job, but when I got home, I found the pen in my bag. It is the kind of pen that can be bought for a shekel or two. My thinking is as follows: The company does not care that it has one less pen in its office. For me to phone them, locate the person in charge, explain what happened, and ask if I could keep the pen would cost me more in time and money than the pen is worth, as would posting it back to them. In these circumstances, does halocho allow me to keep the pen that I took accidentally and use it?

Answer:

I would think the pen was given as a gift. You do not have to return it. If they didn’t ask for it back at the end of the interview, they probably didn’t care that you took it.
