Does the Israeli army fight on the sabbath?

Answer:

Yes, and it is permitted to do so because the cocept of pikuach nefesh, saving a life, defers the observance of the Shabbos. Because the function of an army is required to save lives (especially in Israel), the army is permitted normal function, and certainly the function of warfare, on Shabbos. However, matters that are unrelated to securiy and warfare are not performed by the army on Shabbos.
