Airport on Shabbos

Dear Rabbi,
I am a airport station manager, handling everything related to flight arrival & departures. I am posted overseas. Please advise what precautions do I take if my time at the airport overlaps with Shabbat?

Answer:

By way of introduction, the laws of Shabbat are among the most severe in the Torah. Shabbat is a covenant between the Jewish People and God. Its observation, which declares our faith in the Divine Creation, is among the pillars of the Jewish faith.

If your time overlaps with Shabbat, you should make an arrangement whereby you would not have to work during this time. This might mean extra hours on Sunday, or on Saturday night, but it is definitely worthwhile to get out of the Shabbat desecration of working on Shabbat.

If, for some reason, you find yourself at the airport on Shabbat, you would have to stop working and walk home — depending on the distance of your home from the airport.

Best wishes and good luck!
