The Meaning of Hashem

What’s the meaning of Hashem?

Answer:

Hashem should be read Ha-Shem, and it means “The Name.” The reference is to the Great four-letter Name of God, known as the Tetragrammaton, which according to Jewish law may be written yet may not be spoken. In prayer, the Tetragrammaton is articulated as the holy Name Ado-nai. Outside prayer, blessings, and Torah readings, the Name is expressed simply as “The Name,” Ha-Shem.
