Checking Kids’ Rooms for Chametz

Question:

If a person has children above the age of bar mitzva living at home, who is obligated to check the child’s room for chometz? Is it the father’s obligation because it is his house, or the child’s because it is a place where he is the one who usually brings the chometz?
Thank you

Answer:

Although the child may be the one to bring in the chametz, the obligation to check the entire house falls on the father, for the house belongs to him. If there would be a full rental agreement between the father and the son, this would place the obligation on the sons. However, in the absence of such an agreement, the father retains all rights to the room (he can ask the kids to move out for guests, and so on), and the obligation to check is incumbent on him.

Of course, it is proper that the children help to check for chametz!
