Saul’s Mistake

My questions was:

When Saul made burnt offering, Samuel said. “You have not kept the command the LORD your G-d gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.” What was the commandment Saul did not obey? I thought he was abandoned because he made offering even though he was not a priest.

You gave me answer as follows:
The commandment that Saul did not obey was the obligation to wipe out Amalek. Saul failed to complete this mission when he spared Agag, the king of Amalek, and it was for this that he was punished in losing his kingdom.

My questioln was not yet solved.
The following word was given soon after Saul made offering and beofre he defeated Amelekite.
“You have not kept the command the LORD your G-d gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.”
What command did did Saul keep?

Thanks.

Answer:

You are right–in the last answer I addressed a different verse, and not Samuel 13:13, which is the verse you quote.

As commentators explain, Saul’s crime was in bringing the offerings to G-d, and not waiting for Samuel, which Samuel had instructed him to do. In defying the word of the prophet (out of belief that Samuel would not arrive), Saul can considered to have gone against the word of G-d Himself, for the word of the prophet is the word of G-d. It was for this that Samuel admonished him.

See commentaries of Radak, Ralbag, Malbim, and others, who also explain what caused Saul to make his error of judgment.
