Usually, the K will be accompanied by another symbol: Star K, Triangle K, and so on. These represent different hechsherim, some better than others.
Because I don’t know what standard you’re used to, it’s hard to answer. In general, the K symbol on dairy chocolates does not indicate a good hechsher, but only very basic supervision.
