Keeping a Dog at Home

Question:

What is the law regarding keeping a dog in the home if it is not for protection purposes?

Answer:

There’s no halachic problem of keeping a dog at home, provided it isn’t a “bad dog” that endangers others. Although there are a number of midrashic statements that are not complimentary to dogs, there is no halachic problem in keeping them as pets. Of course, you have to make sure you keep the halachot of owning animals, including feeding them on time, and avoiding violations in taking care of them on Shabbat.
