Haircut on Motza’ei Shabbos / Sunday

Someone who was unable to take a haircut Erev Shabbos (or perhaps did it on purpose, or like last week was machmir to not take because of Rosh Chodesh) is it a “zilzul l’mafriah” to go now and take a haircut on Sunday (if his hair is long and bothering him.) Does it speak about this anywhere?

Answer:

I have never heard of this idea in a strictly halachic sense.

It is of course preferable to take a haircut on Friday in honor of Shabbos, but if a person didn’t make it on time, and now needs a haircut, there won’t be a problem in taking it on Sunday.

If a person was negligent in not taking the haircut on Friday, there might be room, not as a strict halachah but as worthy conduct, to “repair” the matter by waiting — preferably until next Friday, and at least past Motzaei Shabbos or Sunday — so as not to denigrate Shabbos by taking a haircut right away.

  1. The answer implies that one could take a haircut on motzaei shabbs. I believe that once the heter of kovod shabbos has been lost, one has to wait until Sunday in the daytime (for Ashkenazim).

    1. This question doesn’t relate to Lag Ba’Omer, but rather to taking haircuts in general on Friday.
For the Omer you are quite correct, and somebody who misses Friday cannot take a haircut on Motza’ei Shabbos.

      1. To my knowledge, Rav Moshe addresses the matter of participating or being present in a Conservative service or event, and not to entering a building owned by the movement.
I don’t think there’s any statement of identification with the movement by entering for participation in a regular wedding.
        Best wishes.
