Adding Glue to Gid of Tefillin

Is one allowed to place some glue on the gid of Tefillin (which is already sewn closed) to reinforce an area which is very thin, to protect it from possibly ripping in the future? Currently it is held by gid the glue would only be used to strengthen it so it will not possibly rip.

Answer:

The general custom is to be lenient in the matter of adding glue to tefillin: The tefillin are sewn with the gid, and reinforced by glue, to avoid a crack developing (between the bayis and the titura).

The Chazon Ish is stringent concerning adding glue, maintaining that the glue makes the stitch superfluous. Based on this stringecy, many try to avoid the use of glue.

The question in this case (if I understand correctly) is adding glue to the gid, and not to the tefillin, and it is possible that in this case all will agree that it is permitted, seeing as though the gid will continue to hold the tefillin together.

[Sticking the batim together with glue is a different question.]
