Extending the Shiur of a Begged (Tzitzis)

Someone bought a new tallis katan however they wanted it to be a bigger shiur like the Chazzon Ish. So the ‘slit’ that’s in the middle of the beged they sewed it up so the beged would have the shiur is this a problem of “taseh v’lo min ha’aseh” since according to his own chumrah it was “lacking” in the proper shiur beged for a tallis katan. Or perhaps the beged since it’s for sure chayiv in tzitzis only a chumrah to have the shiur then it wouldn’t be a problem.

Answer:

This is an interesting question. The Mishnah Berurah rules in a few places (15:9; 15:7) that the disqualification of ta’aseh velo min ha-asui does not apply where the initial making of the tzitzis was okay, but later the tzitzis became disqualified.

In this case, if the person in question (or his rabbis) consider the principle shiur to be Rav Chaim Na’eh — and this is the generally accepted halachah — then the tzitzis were, indeed, made in a qualified manner, and it is possible that the disqualification of ta’aseh velo min ha-asui will not apply.

Still, the question is interesting.
