The Gift of Healing

Hello Wonderful Rabbi,

In the Hebrew Scriptures … only a few men had the Gift of Miracles and/or Healings (i.e. Elijah, Elisha, Moses) … and not any of the other Prophets had those particular gifts. After the Tanach was written … and up to the 21st Century … were there ever any other spiritual men endowed with these gifts … and if so … who were they (information)?

Shalom.

Answer:

Although you are right in stating that in Scripture we only find particular individuals with the unique powers of healing (including bringing back to life, as found concerning Elisha and Eliyahu), it is noteworthy that the Talmud relates a number of instances in which Talmudic Sages brought the dead back to life (such as bringing back a servant of Antoninus to life in tractate Avodah Zarah, or Rabbah bringing Rabbi Zeirah back to life in tractate Megillah).

It is interesting that the Talmud does not “make a big deal” about these matters, and records them quite matter-of-factly.

Although it does not seem that this power continued on into the later generations, we still find tales of supernatural healing possessed by Torah scholars whose hearts and minds are saturated with Torah — even to this day.

It would perhaps be interesting to make a historical study of this matter, with which I am not very familiar.

Best wishes.
