King and Prophet

Could you please name … ONE (1) … person from the Hebrew Scriptures … who served in the capacity as … BOTH .. King AND Rabbi ( or Prophet, or Priest) … simultaneously?

Answer:

At the time of the Hebrew Scriptures, there was a fair division of labor between the monarchy and the priesthood. The King would run the country, whereas the religious service was carried out by priests, and encouraged by prophets.

However, there were kings who were deeply involved in the religious function of the nation. King David used to judge the people (II Samuel 8), and the Talmud (Sanhedrin 94) writes of Hezekiah that he ensured the entire nation was erudite in Torah knowledge. Other kings tried to purge the nation of idolatry, and so on. Yet, they did not occupy positions in the priesthood (the King of Judah were from the tribe of Judah), nor were they prophets.

In the pre-kingship era, we do of course find people who served both as political leader and as prophet, and who is greater than Moses in this respect.

Best wishes.
