Asking for Price of Car

It it permitted to ask a car sales man his price on a certain car, when your intention is to get someone else who you wanna give the business to lower their price. and only if they’re not willing to lower their price will you buy it from the first sales man?

Answer:

It is best to mention in advance that you are asking the price for purposes of comparison, but that there is a chance of you buying from him.

Sources:

It is prohibited to ask a shopkeeper the price of an item if you have no intention of purchasing it. This is because it will make the owner feel disappointed when you don’t buy it as he thinks you intended to purchase something from him.

Today it is common to compare prices, but nevertheless if there is no intention it is wrong to ask the price without informing the salesman of the intention.

In this case, there is perhaps room for leniency, because of the chance of buying the car from him, but because there is no immediate intention of purchase, it is still best to inform him in advance.

Best wishes.
