Yom Tov Sheini for Israeli

Hi. So basically we live in Israel and so obviously I keep one day while I’m here. But our family are going to visit my grandfather in England for Pesach, so what do we keep? What are Halochos? Publicly/Private? Etc…

Answer:

You will have to keep the second day of Yom Tov (even privately, according to most authorities).

However, it is permitted to perform a melachah in private where there is a way of doing it in a permitted way on Yom Tov itself, for instance:

— Cooking from Yom Tov to Shabbos (this can be done with an eruv tavshilin).

— Lighting a light (because this can be done with a timer — see Iggros Moshe Vol. 4 no. 105.

— Moving a muktzeh item.

— Taking a shower.

But it is forbidden to use a computer, to shave, and so on.

Certainly, you have to wear Shabbos clothes, and ensure that you maintain a festive atmosphere.

Your davening is not the Yom Tov davening, and you don’t say any of the berachos etc. that relate to the second day of Yom Tov. During Chol Ha-Moed, you should go to shul, and daven your own davening. On the last day of Yom Tov daven at home with your tefillin on.

If you have further questions please be in touch.

Best wishes.
