Why did Chazal mandate a meal with kiddush? What is it about the meal that determines if one has fulfilled kiddush for if one does not have a meal kiddush is not fulfilled. Why is the meal necessary to fulfill kiddush?
Please send sources.
Thank you.
Answer:
The source for requiring a meal together with Kiddush is the pasuk “You shall call the Shabbos an oneg (pleasure),” which the Sages understand to mean that the time of “calling” (making Kiddush) must be a time of oneg (pleasure) in eating a meal (see Pesachim 101a, and Tosafos; Rif Pesachim 20a).
Without a mean the “calling” (Kiddush) lacks the element of pleasure mentioned in the verse, and it is therefore considered incomplete, so that one does not fulfill the mitzvah of Kiddush.
Best wishes.
Thank you for your quick response. I do not see the verse you quote on Pesachim 101a (where is the verse from? Is it from Sefer Yeshaya?) And which Tosafot is it? This would be very helpful.
Thank you.
