Gift to Teacher from Maaser

Can one give a gift of money to a son’s teacher in honor of Purim and take it off from maaser?

Answer:

You should not deduct this contribution from maaser – unless the teacher can be categorized as poor, and the contribution a form of tzedakah.

Sources:

A gift to one son’s teacher is not a full “obligation,” and therefore there is room to suggest it can be taken from maaser.

However, one cannot take any payment from maaser, and although matanos la’evyonim (beyond the obligatory amount) can be taken from maaser, mishloach manos cannot.

The gifts to teachers are generally considered a “mishloach manos” and not as “matanos la’evyonim,” so that they can’t be taken from maaser.

Best wishes.
