Third Marriages

bs”d
Where can one find sources regarding third marriages in families in perspective of the Torah?

Answer:

The Torah does not give specific instructions concerning second or third marriages (with the exception of a lady who was widowed twice, for whom there is possibly a problem of katlanis; this depends on the particular circumstances of the case).

However, we do find as a general principle (Yevamos 62-4) that a person should preferably not be alone, and this applies during all stages of life, even after childbearing years are over (see also Tur and Shulchan Aruch, Even Ha-Ezer 1).

Therefore a widow/er or divorcee who has already been through two marriages can and should seek an appropriate partner for a third stable and loving relationship.

However, there are of course personal considerations that a person must take into account, and no halachic response can encompass the different aspect of a person’s life that will influence the decision of entering a relationship.

Best wishes and much success.
