Can one read a newspaper on shabbos?

The Mishnah Berurah (307:63) writes that there are those who are lenient concerning reading newspapers on Shabbos, but many acharonim are stringent because of the problem of reading advertisements.
For some, reading newspapers is clearly a part of oneg Shabbos – it is an act of pleasure that they can enjoy at their leisure on Shabbos – and therefore one can be lenient. The provision is that one should avoid reading the advertisements wherever possible, and certainly one should not focus on them.
