I was taken to a beis din and told that two of the three members were father and son. recently someone told me a father and son cannot both be dayanim on a bais din. can you please tell me what the halacha is concerning a father and son on the same bais din and what recourse would be available if this is not a kosher bais din.

A father and son cannot serve together on a Beis Din (Tur and Shulchan Aruch 7:9).
I am very surprised that this should be the situation on a Beis Din, and you should further investigate the matter.
If it is true you should of course turn to a different Beis Din.
